Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health problem worldwide. Gonorrhea, genital herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis and chlamydia are among the most common STIs. Bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics, but some develop resistance. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can progress without symptoms, so regular screening is important. Bacterial vaginosis is associated with an imbalance in the vaginal flora and treatment of the partner is recommended. Syphilis is an infection that progresses in different stages and can be treated with penicillin G benzathine if diagnosed early. Diseases such as chancroid, lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) and granuloma inguinale cause ulcers and can be controlled with antibiotics. HPV is a common virus transmitted through sexual contact and some types are linked to cancer. Genital herpes is caused by HSV-1 and HSV-2 and causes recurrent ulcers. CMV can cause serious infections in individuals with weakened immune systems and remains in the body for life. While hepatitis B can be prevented with a vaccine, there is no effective vaccine for hepatitis C yet. Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) weakens the immune system, causing Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and can be controlled with medications. Pubic lice, scabies and Candida Albicans are transmitted through sexual contact. Early diagnosis, safe behaviors, hygiene education and public awareness are of great importance to prevent the spread of STIs. Patient-centered care and accessible health services play a critical role in combating infections.
